Position Summary

Stone Environmental is seeking a talented, motivated, and engaged individual with a background in the physical sciences and solid skills in data management, database development, and GIS/spatial analysis. The successful applicant will support environmental and geospatial data analysis projects within the Geospatial and Data Solutions team at Stone, a group of diverse, highly motivated scientists, GIS specialists, and application developers. The Geospatial and Data Solutions team supports a variety of internal and external clients across the environmental assessment and remediation, water resources, and agriculture sectors. This position is primarily in an office setting, with occasional field work.


General responsibilities will include:

  • Database design and developmentĀ 
  • Compilation and manipulation of environmental data using database queries
  • Development of cartographic representation and data visualization
  • Advanced spatial analysis in support of Stone's work in the environmental and agricultural sciences
  • Programming to enable efficient processing of environmental and geospatial datasets
  • Creation of data processing documentation and completion of quality assurance/quality control
  • Support for creation of high-quality scientific analysis and project deliverables, including technical reports and presentations

Required Qualifications

The following skills are required to be considered for this position:

  • Microsoft Access database design, query and form development
  • Working knowledge of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)
  • Proficiency with PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server
  • Geospatial data management and analysis using ArcGIS and ArcGIS Pro
  • Proficiency in cartographic design and mapping automation
  • Computer programming, with proficiency in Python, R, and/or VB.NET
  • Ability to evaluate analytical results
  • Creative thinking and problem solving
  • Self-motivation and keen attention to detail
  • Enthusiasm for learning new skills and subjects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong work ethic

Desired Qualifications

The following skills are beneficial, but are not required for this position:

  • Ability to create PostgreSQL functions and/or Microsoft SQL stored procedures
  • Data management and mapping using ArcGIS Online
  • Experience performing spatial analysis with large national-level environmental datasets including NLCD, STATSGO, SSURGO, and NHDplus
  • Knowledge or experience in analytical chemistry datasets and contaminated site issues
  • Course work or experience in geomorphology, hydrology, or hydrogeology
  • Knowledge or experience in stormwater or wastewater management
  • Statistical and probabilistic analysis
  • Experience with GPS and mobile data collection units
  • Experience with CAD and incorporating CAD data within GIS

Experience and Education

Bachelor's degree or higher in the physical sciences or computer science. Two years of experience in a database and GIS role, ideally working with a scientific or environmental consulting firm or organization. An advanced degree may substitute for work experience.
