Position Summary

Stone Environmental, Inc. is seeking an environmental scientist with a strong background in stormwater management, water resources, and environmental policy. The successful applicant will manage and provide technical support for a variety of projects including stormwater and phosphorus management planning and analysis for municipalities and the Vermont Agency of Transportation, local and state-wide stormwater policy development and technical review, and occasional work in other water sectors such as wastewater capacity development for unsewered communities.

Responsibilities

The person performing this job will be a "manager-doer"responsible for a mix of project management and execution of technical work, including coordinating and conducting desktop and field data collection activities; developing and maintaining stormwater infrastructure and retrofit practice datasets; processing, interpreting, and presenting water quality, hydrologic, land cover/land use, and stormwater management data; completing literature reviews and condensing findings; and preparing high quality technical memoranda and reports.

Required Skills and Experience

The following skills are required to be considered for this position:

  • Experience with post-construction stormwater management with a focus on green infrastructure practices, as well as understanding of erosion prevention and sediment control techniques
  • Experience with project management, including managing budgets and schedules, leading preparation of task deliverables, and developing and managing development of scopes of work, technical reports, permit requirement summaries, and similar deliverables
  • Ability to communicate diplomatically and professionally with diverse audiences in writing and in person, including in public meetings where contrasting opinions are regularly expressed
  • Strong computer skills, including working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS/ArcPro) and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work effectively under time pressure and to handle multiple assignments while meeting deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large environmental and/or infrastructure datasets
  • Motivation and enthusiasm to learn new skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Legally able to work in the United States (proper documentation required)

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with federal and state stormwater management regulations, including Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) or Transportation Separate Storm Sewer Systems (TS4) permit compliance
  • Experience in developing and implementing watershed-based plans that address nutrients, bacteria, and other pollutants, particularly in urban and village contexts
  • Strong interest in Vermont's clean water initiatives
  • Knowledge of and experience with watershed and stormwater design modeling software, including HydroCAD and/or PCSWMM
  • Experience with stormwater management in the context of public or private roadways
  • Ability to read and analyze design plans; ability to complete simple plan modifications using AutoCAD Civil 3D. Ability to create design plans and details, and/or experience with Sketchup, a plus.

Experience Level and Education

  • Master's degree in a physical science (e.g., hydrology, geology, environmental science, or related discipline), civil/environmental engineering, or in environmental science and policy with a water resources focus.
  • Three to five years of post-graduate experience in a government, consulting, or scientific position in a relevant field.
